Oldenburg 2015...

Nick
Hi Helena,

I have 'tidied' the photo showing a lorry in a town square and can now tell you it was not Neustadt in Holstein but Oldenburg in Holstein some 26 kms further north...
Your photo shows the Rathaus (Town Hall) from across the market square - then known as Adolf Hitler Platz.

Nick

Helena,

It's from a large collection of photographs of 1 SS Brigade moving through France and the Netherlands and through Germany to Lubeck & Neustadt...

Here is the Album if you want to browse through...
Click on the thumbnail to open the image then click again to enlarge the image.
Thumbnails that have a grey surround are sub-albums and contain a lot of other images...
Your grandpa was in 1 SS Brigade HQ Troop - hopefully you may spot him and, if you do, can you let us know so we can annotate the photos accordingly .

Have fun...

Hi Helena,

Just out of interest, is your grandpa on this photo at all?

Nick
Mike,

Are the service records you received from MoD typed or a scan of handwritten sheets?
If they are the handwritten pages then you should have everything the MoD hold...

If you have the handwritten sheets then post them into this thread and I can take a quick look to see if I can spot anything you may have overlooked?

Nick

Hi Mike,

Yes the cap badges are almost certainly those of the Royal Artillery.

Nick
Hi Kate,

Bizarrely, yours is the second post we have received from a Funeral Celebrant seeking information regarding an SBS veteran, who has passed leaving few or no family or friends, this year!

If you give me the funeral details I can post them on the CVA Facebook page if you wish.

You may want to contact the SBS Association:

Hi Frank,

Welcome to the CVA Website and Forums.

Are you trying to find out about your Great Uncle or have you come across the badge and wish to know more about it?

Nick

Here is Norman Keeble's self portrait sent in by Amanda who will be conducting his funeral.

Nick
Hi Kevin,

5932658 Pte. Earl Cambridgeshire Regt. is listed in the War Diary [WO 106 5012 - China 204 Personnel, 12 Jan 42 - 23 Aug 44] as ''On Strength Of Contingents But Not Allocated (As Of 29 September 1942)''.

Nick

Hi Amanda,
Thank you, I will put out the funeral details and emphasise that it is to be low key.
I have emailed the SBS Association and left messages with the Royal Marines Association - Norman would have been in the Royal Marines then he would have had to 'pass Selection' to become one of the elite SBS.
I am waiting replies but obviously all these things take time...

Regards,

Nick
Hi Helena,

We have a Sgt Arthur Driscoll listed as No.4 Commando, however, No.4 Commando was part of 1 Commando Brigade - so that fits.

Guy, if I've got the right guy, it looks like a Royal Signals badge to me - Helena, can you confirm I've circled your grandfather?

Nick

Hi Amanda,
Thanks for that information.
Would it be acceptable for veterans to attend the funeral as a sign of respect?
If so, then they would just wear beret's, civilian coats/jackets and medals.

Regards,

Nick

Amanda,

A quick 'Google' threw up this reference to
Norman Francis Keeble, a military veteran from Felixstowe...

Nick

Hi Amanda,
Thanks for getting in touch with us regarding Norman Keeble.
Although he probably wasn't a member of our association, I will put the feelers out to see what I can find out.
If you can let me know the time and place of the funeral, I will disseminate that information to various Forces Associations in the hope that we can get some Veterans to attend and help with the send off...

Regards,
Nick
