Those who have applied to the Historical Disclosures Office in Glasgow may be wondering why there is such a long delay to process their application.
I was in communication with that Office today and was sent the following information which is a far better explanation of the problem and answers the questions of, 'Why has my cheque still not been cashed...'

MoD wrote:As a consequence of the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic and direction from the Scottish Government, the Department was unable to function properly for an extended period lasting many months. The files necessary to process the vast majority of genealogical requests are only held in paper format and have not been accessible during this period.

A significant backlog of work has built up during the lockdown period as postal applications continued to be sent to the office. Regrettably these unprecedented circumstances mean that applications sent in the last year or so may not yet have been actioned or even opened.
Additional staffing resources have been identified and are being utilised.

I am new to the website and wish to know what 10 Commando(Polish) did during WW2 any books or information would be great

The Polish commandos served in 6 Troop of No.10 (Inter Allied) Commando.
As well as the book mentioned above there is, 'Commando In Exile' by Nick van der Bijl. Published by Pen & Sword.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Graham's passing and can only echo the words of Pete Rogers...
Graham made huge contributions to the Cdo Nominal Rolls and was always embarrassed when he was given credit for his contribution and sterling efforts.

Rest in Peace Graham,

I can thoroughly recommend two books by Mike Banks:

Commando Climber - https://www.commandoveterans.org/commando_climber_author_mike_banks

Snow Commando, author Mike Banks, published by Burke Publishing, first published 1961.

Hi Shaun,

I have a J W Keefe in my No.9 Cdo Nominal Roll - up until now that was all the details I had, but will now update.
I also have a database of soldiers from SLI who became commandos - I will add his details there as well...

Hi Ciaran,

All the references to Jimmy (Sgt James Synnott, Royal Artillery & No.3 Cdo) have a double 'N' in his surname, whereas you spell it with a single 'N' - can you confirm which is correct?

Nick
Hi Robbie,

I have attached the listing of George Chapman as a PoW in Stalag 11A and the entry in the Cdo Assoc Newsletter, issue 91, August 1990.
Hope this helps your research.

Hi Jon.

I'm sorry you've not received any replies to you question yet - but I'm sure you appreciate that it's the proverbial needle in the haystack scenario...
The problem is there is very little information to go on other than first/nick names.

Looking at the Nominal Roll for No.7 Commando - which was only recently compiled - but is nowhere near complete - there was a number of commandos called John and the derivative of John was 'Jack'! There are also a lot of commandos with the initial 'J' who might also fit the bill...
Don is probably a derivative of Donald which suggests a Scottish origin - and there were a number of commandos from the London Scottish (regiment)!
Frederick was quite a common first name - I have counted 12 commandos whom we have recorded as being Frederick, but this does not include those whose initial is 'F' or any that we don't have an initial or first name for!
Similarly there are a couple of 'Walters' - but also a lot with the initial 'W'.

I don't suppose your grandmother has any photos of the commandos at 58 St Andrews Road which we could use to compare with photos in the CVA Gallery?

Nick

Yes, that's who I thought - from Whitstable in Kent...

Nick
Hi Laurence,

Did your great uncle, Anthony Burke, have a middle name? And whereabouts did he live?

Nick

Hi manufan,

No.9 Cdo were at Kirkcudbright during Sept/Oct '41 - although at least one Troop at a time was on detachment at Castle Douglas...
The official War Diary for No.9 Cdo, during the month of Oct, shows three entries where 3311891 Private Alexander Watson, H.L.I. (Highland Light Infantry) is mentioned...
Unfortunately the nature of the accident nor the findings of the Court of Inquiry are recorded.

Nick

Hi Sean,

The probability is that he was in 47 RM Cdo if he took part in the D-Day Landings as, at that time, 42 RM Cdo were serving as part of 3 Cdo Brigade out in India/Burma.

Nick

Great Effort, Pete.

It is with deep regret and profound sadness that we record the passing of Ken Child on 1st June 2021 just days after celebrating his 99th birthday.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Ken's family at this sad time.

When Shall Their Glory Fade...
