Dear all

We are progressing at the moment and the three new display cases (thanks to West Highland Museum) are in place. We are putting documents into folders. We are looking into the lighting of the areas now with the CVA. I think our realistic anticipated date for the work to be finished will be October 2009.

Thanks to Willie Hervo, John Whyte for helping in this work and Fred Davies who is supporting us. We are doing this to help others to remember the Commandos, past and present, who gave us and give us our freedom. They are remembered with honour.

Best wishes

Bill

Appeal after collection box damaged at Commando Memorial

Police in Lochaber are appealing for information after a collection box at the Commando Memorial near Spean Bridge was found to have been damaged.
The box, which raises fund for the upkeep of the site , appears to have struck with some kind of tool in an apparent attempt to force entry damaging the lock.
The damage was discovered on Tuesday, August 28 and is believed to have occurred sometime in the last two weeks.
Entry was not gained to the collection box and nothing was stolen.
Constable Brian Heriot said: "This is a particularly disrespectful act given the location of this collection box and what the funds are used for
"We would urge anybody who saw anything suspicious in the area or has information which could assist us to get in touch as soon as possible."
Anyone with information can contact police in Fort William on 101, quoting reference NP3483/18, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Remembered with honour. Our thoughts and prayers are with Frank and all the commando community. Always in our hearts.

Bill

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, comrades and friends.

Thanks for his service and for our freedom.

They changed troops all the time as Nick says it is very difficult to track them down to a troop. Dad was in A troop and was 3 Troop when kia Flushing.

It may be worth contacing the Arran Heritage Museum as they have some details on No 11 Commando who trained on the Isle of Arran. http://www.arranmuseum.co.uk/

Pete is it ok to share this?

Copied from event
"Details
The Special Operations Executive (SOE) also known as Churchill's Secret Army, was established by Churchill during World War 2 to train operatives and send them behind enemy lines to organise resistance. Based in Lochaber, trained operatives are widely credited with changing the course of the Second World War through their involvement in many daring and dangerous raids on enemy territory.

Gilly Halcrow is an accomplished speaker whose father, Colonel Ernest van Maurik, was an SOE veteran. We are delighted to welcome Gilly just ahead of the publication of her late father's memoirs, "Agent Paterson SOE" at the end of May.

It's certain to be another entertaining and informative evening in The Highland Bookshop and we do hope you can join us.

Tickets for this event are 7 and include a refreshment. Please drop in, email bookshop@highlandbookshop.com or call 01397 705931 to reserve your ticket."
