Dan,
This is the entry for 7022513 C J Coughlin from the War Office casualty list (WO417/80). It must have been transcribed incorrectly.
I will send you an address of a person that I believe is C J Coughlin's grandson.

Good luck with your project.
Guy
5385055 Gnr William Thomass Pollard Royal Artillery (Field)

Your grandfather originally enlisted in the Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, before transferring to the Royal Artillery.
He was posted to 3 Troop 3 Commando on the 26th June 1944. He was wounded in action on the 16th August 1944. He may have been posted to HOC Wrexham after recovering from his wounds?

All would be confirmed by obtaining a copy of your grandfather's service records.

Good luck with your research
Guy

Paul,
It does look like Horwood on the service record. Kenneth's mother was Penelope Horwood, she married Samuel Albert Burton in Pontypridd, Glamorganshire 4Q 1909. I'll have a look at the next of kin.
Guy
Paul,
His RAC attestation record appears to list him as Kenneth HORWOOD Burton. I assumed it was a clerical error, but on checking I found his mother's maiden name was Horwood.
Are there any next of kin details on the service records to help trace any living relatives?

Nick,
3 Commando were involved in rock climbing training in Devon in the first half of 1942. Individual Troops were posted from Largs to Devon for a months training.
6 Troop of 3 Commando began their training on the 2nd March 1942. The boxer you refer to may well be Durling of 6 Troop 3 Commando, he was British Army heavyweight boxing champion in India.

I have been trying to find information on him and can find no record of him at all.
Guy
Ed,
I have found 2617040 Cpl W.H Pittson serving with the 5th Grenadier Guards. He was wounded in action on the 27th April 1943 in North Africa.

Thank you to all who maintain this exceptional archive.

915218 Bdr. Alfred Robert Child joined the Royal Artillery in 1939.
Steve,
the Nottingham Evening Post published a photograph of Corporal Severn on the 10th August 1942. They had previously reported him missing on the 30th March 1942.

I found this interesting story in the Lancashire Evening Post. The 1st Loyals lost their Regimental drum during their rear guard actions at Dunkirk in May 1940. The drum was recovered by a unit of 1st Commando Brigade and presented back to the Loyals by Sergeant's Fisher and Johannesen in August 1945.

Albert Edward Johannesen was born 7th January 1917 and died in Glamorgan in 2004

Does anyone know any more about this story?

Guy
Nigel

L/Cpl Boxall was listed as an equipment repairer attached to the Head Quarters Troop of 3 Commando in November 1943.

Guy
Graham,
Major A G KOMROWER DSO was posted from 3 Commando to CBTC Achnacarry on the 24th January 1944 as 2 I/C. Lt Col. Vaughan visited the 1st Commando Brigade HQ at Venray Holland sometime in February / March 1945. Major Komrower was the CO in his abscence. Lt Col. Vaughan took part in a night patrol which I mentioned in the thread started by his great niece.

^Pete R. All the above have been dealt with. I'm pleased to say, as before, that Graham's list did include all the missing middle names, and these have now been added. The reason they and others were not included was purely a format issue. I have all the details and more that Graham has sent, and they will be added in due course onto the site

A-C Missing Names and typos

BARKER Alfred
BASS Keith James
BEDDOW should be Beddows
BIRMINGHAM Christopher
BOWYER G
BRIAND Gaston
BROADMAN Geoff typo
BRUYNE Ron
BURTON RR
CHALMER should be Chalmers
CROXTON Michael J

Guy

^Pete R... All the above now dealt with. Those missing had been added after Graham had sent me his list, as with most of those from Mark above. Ron Bruyne is actually listed correctly as Ron de Bruyne in the D section where all those with De before their surname are found.
