Article from Australia on Z Special unit
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-08-30/z-special-unit-history/5706968?§ion=news
For 30 years members of Australia's World War II commando Z Special Unit were sworn to secrecy and their heroism unacknowledged.
But recently there has been growing recognition of the specialist reconnaissance and sabotage unit the Australian Army credits as the foundation for the modern Special Air Services Regiment or SAS.
In 1943, in what is regarded by many as the most successful clandestine military operation ever ? Operation Jaywick ? a team of 14 Z Special Unit commandos paddled into Singapore harbour in kayaks and attached limpet mines to Japanese enemy shipping.
The stealthy raiders sunk seven ships or 39,000 tonnes before escaping home to Australia undiscovered.

Seventy-one years after the end of World War 2, members of Z Special Unit will be remembered with the dedication of a commemorative plaque at the Australian War Memorial.
Twenty-three ZSU veterans will be in Canberra on Monday for this event, along with 20 widows and a large number of family members.

The commemorative plaque is the idea of Australian National University anthropologist Christine Helliwell who has conducted extensive field work in Borneo.
