The fabulous news about a proposed museum at Spean Bridge to house the memorabilia from the old hotel will re-open the discussion....... who were the 'models'?
I wont kick that off again, its been done , but - the newspaper interview with Jack Lewington, and backed up with other stories in this Forum tells us that the photos that were used to create the statue were taken on a table in a gym in Winchester barracks toward the end of the war in 1945.
But ..... the Committee which found the site and awarded the commission to create the monument was not formed until 1947.
So - who issued the order to pick three big men, dress them up in full kit and take lots of photos just at the last possible moment as the Army Commando units were about to be disbanded?
And - back to the 'Who are they' question - Jack Lewington is the one in the middle, he and Jimmy (Jock) Muirhead and Jock More were all in No.4, and it must be unlikely that men from other units were sent to Winchester to jump onto a table for a photoshoot - but who was 'Taffy' Jones? - There will be a lot of contenders for that one!
