Hello John and all,
The Kukri notch, mystifying?. I have looked on the web for various explanations and found many and varied.
To prevent blood reaching the handle and loosening the grip.?
Represents the Tripod of the Hindu God Shiva
Represents the hoof of the sacred cow
A site used for aim before throwing the knife at the enemy when after displacing the enemies head the knife would return like a boomerang. But the knife was never thrown.
To stop the sharpening tool from hitting the handle
To stop the enemies knife sliding down the blade in close combat
A story.
A Ghurka suddenly came onto his enemy, Naturally he struck first "the decapitating blow". "Yah missed" said the enemy, "Try shaking your head" replied the Ghurka.
All for now
Regards Ron

Hello All,
The Kukri notch, which is cut in the blade just above the handle, slightly M shaped. We have solved the mystery at last. Whilst at the Unveiling celebration at the showground I was visited by some of the younger serving men, who were taking a great interest in the items on display, one of which picked up one of the Kukri's on show, I asked him what the notch was for, and he told me with a certain pleasure on his smiling face it is for slitting round the throat in the area of the jugular veins, to which he gave me a rough demonstration, placed the knife back on the display and carried on with viewing the other items. So my thanks to him and his pals, and we hope to see you all soon.
Regards Ron

The notch. Generally referred to as a cho. I read that the Gurkha Museum calls it a kaura.

There are many different shapes and I can assure you that they have no functional purpose. Each shape actually represents a temple roof, religious symbol or good luck sign.
