Could anyone help please .... Are archives kept anywhere for public viewing.

Looking to view archives, war diaries, any documentation etc relating to 44 Commando.

Hi David,

War Diaries are held at the National archives at Kew. Unfortunately they are not online but can be viewed and photographed free of charge.

Alternatively, if you cannot visit the NA, you are able to hire a Researcher but this can work out to be very costly.

You might find The Royal Marine Museum at Eastney may have some information in their archives. From past experience - it used to be possible to visit by appointment. I am not sure what service is provided now or whether War Diaries are available - probably not - but I would suggest writing, or contact by telephone in advance to see what is available. The general link is as follows:

I hope this helps

The NA reference numbers for 44 Cdo war diaries are:

ADM 202/95 - Aug 1943 - Dec 1944
ADM 202/96 - Jan ? Dec 1945

I would highly recommend visiting Kew, it's a great day out, and to touch the original documents is a treat to behold!

Good luck
Paul

Many thanks for the references. I just looked at my notes and really only appear to confirm what you have written. However, I think there is also a consolidated file - DEFE 2/50

ADM 202/95 - Aug 1943 - Dec 1944
ADM 202/96 - Jan 1945 - Dec 1945
ADM 202/97 - Jan 1946 - Nov 1946

DEFE 2/50 - 1/8/1943 to 31/12/1945

Regards
Mike
