Hi
A question in two parts:
1) STC (special trg camp) Achdalieu Lodge - was it really a STC - the only reference I can find to it being a STC is from the 6 cdo web site - under SGT John Stevenson - he was posted there.
2)In CVA picture gallery Cdo-Combined ops in WW2 - Housing etc - there is a picture of Achdalieu Lodge with a reference to 10 Ind
company being housed there.Question is,is there a history for 10 Ind company - formation / locations/ names and dates of its demise.
Thanks in advance
Regards
Graham.

By their deeds they shall be known

Not conclusive but it doesn't appear on here:
http://www.secretscotland.org.uk/index.php/Secrets/SpecialOperationsExecutive

But does here:

Note the references to Commando Country by Stuart Allan

Not sure I've helped, just wanted to share these good websites!

Would this be the 10 Independent Company that my dad was in? Posted from 6/Border, 26.4.40. Embarked 28.8.40 on the M S Sobieski ... to West Africa - returning 26.10.40.

If I have praised my comrades too highly I make no apology, for they were beyond all praise.

Graham & Eileen,

No 10 Independant Company was formed from 66th East Lancashire Division under Major I. de C. Robertson, TA General List.
Each Independent Company had an establishment of 21 officers and 268 other ranks.
In Aug 1940, No 10 Independant Company, now under the command of Major A.C.W. May, were sent out on an abortive expedition to Dakar (Operation Menace) with the Royal Marines Striking Force.
Whilst they were in Africa the rest of the Independent Companies were reformed into the Special Service Battalions.
When No10 Independant Company eventually arrived back from West Africa at the end of Oct 40 they were disbanded at Fort William.

Here is a link to the Paradata site that gives another reference to Achdalieu Lodge being used as an STC.

Marvellous!

So ... it doesn't say that 10 was formed from soldiers from 6th Battalion/Borders ... would that have been another occasion where dad volunteered? Mam said he used to volunteer for everything.

Eileen,

6th (East Cumberland) Battalion, Border Regt was part of 198th Infantry Brigade which was part of 66th Infantry Division in 1939.

66th (2nd East Lancs) Division was demobilised after the WWI, but was reconstituted as the 66th Infantry Division during the hurried expansion of the Territorial Army in 1939.
A second line TA division, it was disbanded on 23 June 1940 having never moved from the UK. Between 3 September and 27 September, 1939 the units of this division were moved into the 42nd Infantry Division.

Thanks so much, Nick. I read all these numbers and don't really understand it all ... but then somebody like you comes along and breaks it down for me. Very much appreciated, young man! :)
