Hi all

Thought I'd share these with anyone who is interested in reading or seeing Commando based books and stories.

As you can imagine the exploits of the commando units make very fertile ground for authors both within and outside the forces.
Several members that we all know have turned their attention to poetry or articles. John Lowman and Vic Ralph being two who I can think of right away.

The tradition of Commando stories goes all the way back to the early days of WW2.

Below are several examples that I thought maybe of interest:

Everyone I'm sure knows of the 'Commando' comics but other volumes are out there.

Robert Henriques

Henriques was an officer from No 12 commando and later Brigade Major and at Combined Operations headquarters.
His books are written as novels but are drawn from actual raids and activities that he experienced whilst serving with the commandos.
Henriques authored ten books and became a well read novelist.
One of his books 'Through The Valley' is dedicated to fellow No 12 officer Phillip Pinkcney

Most published between 1942/50

Percy Westerman

Again a prolific author but his work is mainly aimed at the younger audience

More 'fictional' than Henriques but again drawing on actual raids etc. eg Dieppe

Victor and other Comics[u]

Victor came into being after the war years and featured many military operations as their lead feature.

Many VC actions are covered and a good few commando raids etc. Although written and illustrated for the younger audience the facts that are potrayed and illustrated are amazingly acurate and it makes you wonder where their sources came from.

The very first Victor Annual 1963 featured the St Nazaire raid on its cover. Other raids were featured on later editions.

Well worth looking out for :D

Hope these might get you on the lookout

Do not speak.....unless it improves on Silence.

A good teacher opens the door.....you must enter yourself.
