Hi Ann
You have my heartfelt sympathy.
My Dad also died young in 1977 aged 55yrs.
He also was modest and quiet about his wartime service.
It was only later when I researched into it that I realised what he had endured.

You can only look back wth admiration and pride.

Regards
John M

Yes

They should be published in the London Gazette.

You can research it online. You need to have a rough idea of the date awarded. If you have your dads service record it should be in there.

Hi Ann,

Ive spent a considerable amount of time trying to find information on your father.

Did you know the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal was only awarded 72 times for WW2 to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. ...........now compare that figure to the 15000 awards of the Military Medal for WW2 or 11,000 awards of the Military Cross.

For insurance purposes your looking at about 10,000 pounds for just a single but to a Royal Navy Commando around 30,000 pounds...........thats excluding all your fathers other medals.......so probably with a DSM, USA awards 70-80 thousand pounds.

Not that I`m questioning your information, but do you have a photo of your father wearing ribbons or his medals? I know you do not have the facility to scan but would it be a lot to ask for a photo copy of a photo to the administrator of this forum so we could see it. I am totally confused as to why I can find nothing................are you 100 precent sure its the CGM he was awarded?

Here is a photo of a CGM on the front of this group.......are you sure this is the correct medal?

Now what I am assuming here is that the D.S.M is the British Distinguished Service medal. The Americans awarded a medal during WW2 also called the Distinguished Service Medal.

The Royal Navy Commandos during WW2 did have considerable involvment with Americans forces during WW2.

The good news is there is a book......all this book consists of is lists of mens names but it will serve to confirm the award of the DSM and we can use that information as a platform to find more information.

You might try ordering the above book from your local library.

I really would like to see that photo. If he is wearing ribbons I should be able to identify all medals, including the American award.

Is the photo you have an original? The copy you are sending to me needs to be clear so I can identify the ribbons.

You can send me a photocopy. Many newsagents now offer this service. Put the copy in an envelope and post it me, second class should be fine. I am of course assuming your in the UK.

I have in the past had much success in identifying medal ribbons from B&W photos. All the campaign medals have distinctive stripes through the ribbons in most cases you dont need to view them in colour.

If the photo you have does NOT have any ribbons or medals on it you could write to the familly and ask for another photograph.
