:( have been reading the hong kong war diary page, and due to my emotions running high, you`ll have to excuse me,but this was a bitch of a place,I have found lists of soldiers held there but don`t know where to look for the soldiers who liberated it.When I asked my Grandpa(Gordon Percy Lain,No 5 commando,6 troop, heavy weapons)what he did in the war,he always replied..."not alot, had to go and clear up!!) Maybe he did help liberate Fan Ling,it makes sense to what he told me when I was little. Is there somewhere I can go to get copies of 6 troops war diaries, surely it would be in there?I am more determined than ever to find out what the hell he was doing there!!! PLEASE,he were`nt out in Hong Kong on his own was he,someone must know something....don`t be shy!!! Take care,Denise xx

Hi Denise,

I believe my father was in Hong Kong. His name was Walter Jones and strangely enough I've a photo of him on horseback as well. If you look at two messages above this one on the board for Walter Jones 1/5 CDO the photo is in there. I'm struggling as well to find info.

Cheers

hi first off what a wonderful site and great work your all doing

i have a couple of pics from fan ling - one also has Kam stim written on the back . My dad L\cpl William (Bill) Silvester was there in 46 with the 5th cmdo (i will upload the pics today . one has 4 other commandos definately identified and written on the back of the picture.)

Like most commandos Dad never spoke much about the Arakan ,but he did relay a story about when he was in the Hong Kong New territories ,he was on patrol with his outfit and as a lance corporal for some reason in command of this small border patrol ...suddenly Chang Kai Shek and his army .arrived..on the border..

Someone got out a piece of chalk and drew a line down the middle of the road and tried to explain it was British territory and they could not come in ....it was a tense moment as guns were cocked and it appeared to be about to kick off...the commandos simply started looking down the barrels of the opposing guns and inspecting them for cleanliness which seemed to defuse the situation and there was laughter .At that point Jeeps turned up with various officers in and the matter was turned over to them . He also said they helped build the race course while they were there .

hope this helps anyone

in addition to the posting above, it appears Fan ling was 5 commando hq and also a holding area for japanese soldiers who themselves were now prisioners of war.

Prior to shipment back to china and on to Japan ..although many Japanese soldiers were disarmed it was negotiated with Japanese officers that some would retain arms to allow them to protect themselves as they travelled through china ...
