Hi,
I'm very new at this and I'm just fishing around for some information on my Grandfather Cyril Knowles. I have a photo of him on his wedding day which he has written on the back that it is from 1941 and explains that his uniform is for the 4th Commando British Army F Troop.
I'm just trying to figure out if I'm on the right track
Thanks
Sam

Hi Sam,
Welcome to the Commando Veterans Forum, from down under I see,
Cannot add a lot, but can confirm what you have mentioned. There is an obituary notice ,way back in 2004,which states only
4 Commando
Sgt Cyril Knowles of Australia.
Sorry its not a lot ,but it does confirm what you know.
All the best
Graham

Thanks Graham at least I know I'm on the right track
I can confirm that Cyril passed away in 2003 in South Australia, I went to his funeral - I didn't realise our family had put his Army info on the obituary, where did you find that?
I have another photo here that has a few other people in it that he's named - Is there somewhere I can upload that in case someone else is searching for these people?

There's a Sgt Cyril Knowles in the Nominal Roll.
My dad was in No.4 and I'd love to see the photo.

Sam,
In the photograph your Grandfather is wearing a Service Dress Tunic with collar badges suggesting that he served in the Royal Army Service Corps pre-war?
I also found a reference in a newspaper to Cyril Knowles, ex-Commando on a wrestling programme in Hamilton in 1947. Is this your Grandfather or another Cyril Knowles?

Hi Eileen - I've attached the photo for you :) it is dated August 1944, in Turkey - the back lists the men as
1. Ron Ross
2. Bill McKenzie
3. Cyril Knowles
4. Bill Coleman
GUY - I don't think my Grandfather would have been wrestler but you never know! I'll ask my Dad next time I see him :) Thanks for the info about the uniform, I'll do a bit more digging. On the back of his photo he went into quite a bit of detail about the lanyard and explained that it was only issued to F Platoon?? but all he says is British Army

You should get your Dad to apply for your Grandfather's service record. If the nearest nok applies a copy of the full record will be sent. All the information is on here : http://www.commandoveterans.org/ResearchAdvice
In regards to the training that your Grandfather is likely to have gone through, please refer to our Commando training section here and in particular note the 2 books shown as the source for much of the information there. Essential reading if you want to get a feel of what your Grandfather went through during his time with the Commandos : http://www.commandoveterans.org/CommandoTraining.
Your Grandfather posted this message in a Commando Association newsletter 115 that was published Sept 2002:
Does any member of "F" Troop 4 Cdo. remember S/Sgt. Cyril Knowles who served with the Commando from its earliest days to the Spring of l941 ? If so, Cyril would be delighted to hear from you at (address removed), Whyalla Stuart, 5608, South Australia.
The details referred to by Graham were in the Obituary column of Commando Association newsletter 119 of September 2004 alongside the names of others who had died.
Regards
Pete
