I am attempting to confirm if Peter Fleming ,my uncle served in the Commando"s during WW 2.I have his service records ,which state dates and times he was posted away from England, his records reflect no indication that he was in the Commandos ,he had been in the Signals in 1929 till 1937,then being in the Army Reserve.Rejoining in 1939 records indicate BEF 5-4-39 to 25-1-40 .Home 26-1-40 to 26-4-40.BEF 27-4-40 to 4-6-40.Home 5-6-40 to 16-6-43.N.Africa 17-6-43 to 7-11-43.Home 8-11-43 to 22-12-45.Z RAR 23-12-45 to 9-6-47.
On the 22-4-42 he is shown as being in 48th Div Sigs
I am confused with these dates as family members had heard recounts of his invovlement in the Dieppe Raid ,where they confirm he arrived home wounded.Being in the Royal Signals ,could he have been a member of the Commandos and if so ,why do his records not indicate he was away during the period of the Raid or with the Commandos.
Please advise if anyone could help to verify if Comando service would be reflected on service records.

He is not listed as being with or attached to No 4 Army Commando at Dieppe. No 3 Army Commando And No 40 RM Commando were there but I do not listing for them. The No 4 list was drawn up in 1990.
Wish you all the best with your search.

Thanks for looking Bill,a family member heard a recollection from him regarding signalling for the Canadian troops at Dieppe to come forward.Could he have been at Dieppe without serving with the Commandos,if not would any participation in this action by PeterFleming be documented anywhere.

J Squadron GHQ Liaison Regiment "Phantom" had signallers attached to the Canadians during Operation Jubilee.
48th (South Midland) Division saw action in Belgium and France in 1940. They were evacuated out of Dunkirk and remained in Britain for the remainder of the war. He must have transferred to another unit to have been posted to North Africa in 1943?

Just to add to Guy's information.. an excert from "The Royal Corps of Signals Units Histories" The 48th Division Signals went to France in April 1940. After Dunkirk, the division remained on home defence, and was involved in training duties for the remainder of the war. The signal unit transferred to 78th Division for service in Tunisia and Italy from 1943.
