It is with great sadness that we advise you of the death, on the 5th July 2014, of Barney Davies, aged 95, who served in No4 Commando.
Barney survived Dieppe, Lofoten and two raids on Boulogne and the Normandy landings.

Barney is reunited with his wife, who predeceased him in 2003.

Our thoughts & prayers are with all his family and friends.

Rest in Eternal Peace Barney.

Nick

It is clear from "The Commandos at Dieppe" by Will Fowler that Barney, together with Gnr McDonough of 4 Cdo, played a vital role with the Boys Anti-Tank Rifle in the attack on the Hess Battery - firing sixty rounds in all. The weapon was used against an anti-aircraft gun mounted on a wooden tower in the centre of the battery, machine gun posts and a further flak position.

Thank you for that very interesting piece of information, John.

We learned of Bernard Davies' passing via Jim Watters, on the CVA Facebook page. Jim had seen a snippet in his local paper and mentioned it.
Bill Harvey asked if an obituary could be put on the CVA Forum
Graham Cooper & I thought we had identified Bernard as Barney but couldn't be 100% sure so, until we were absolutely positive that Bernard & Barney were the same person, no obituary was posted.
Jim Watters was sent off to get information and, yesterday, turned up trumps with an announcement from his local press which confirmed that we had the right man...

Barney's family knew that he had been in No4 Cdo and supplied the information about the raids, but I wonder if they knew about Barney & Gnr McDonogh stirling efforts with the Boys Anti-Tank Rifle in the attack on the Hess Battery.
Hopefully, with Jim's help we can let them know.

When Shall Their Glory Fade...

Nick

Very sad news but excellent research - I'm sure Barney's family would be very proud to learn of this information. Many veterans were so modest that their families probably don't know of similar exploits either. It is right to place them on record in remembrance.
