This newspaper cutting from the Worthing Herald has been passed on to me. By coincidence it is dated June 6th.
This would have been a Commando raid for the history books !
Has anybody heard of Captain Pinckney ?

Hello Peter

Welcome to our forums.

We have indeed heard of Captain Phillip Pinckney he was a much respected commando leader from No 12 Commando. He was the troop leader of E Troop No 12 Cdo.

The raid you have highlighted was indeed audacious and would have been quite spectacular if it had been pulled off.

The pilot who was going to fly the German plane home was Jeffery Quill and he has detailed the mission in his book :
Spitfire A Test Pilots Story where he devotes a chapter to this mission.

Captain Pinckney was most affronted when the mission was called off due to to an FW190 being landed in Wales by a German pilot.
'Some bloody fool has landed an FW190 in wales and it is undamaged. We've been robbed.'
was Pinckneys reaction......... which sums up his spirit as a commando leader.

Capt Pinckney lost his life whilst on a mission for the SAS in 1943 in Italy.

A true hero.

Regards
John M
