Pte. J. Carten, No.9 Commando, is shown as being a member of the original Commando Association which stood down in 2005. That would explain the black hackle, or plume, in his green beret that you mention. His last known address was in the Kirkham area.

If this is your uncle, can you scan the pic where he is wearing his green beret and send me a copy and I will add his picture to the gallery.
My email address is below or on the CVA 'Contact Us' section

To find out more about his service you will have to apply for a copy of his service record. This can take up to 12 months to receive after
application so worth applying sooner rather than later. How to do so can be found here:
http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html

Here is a link to our No.9 Commando gallery:

Additionally here is a link to the history of No.9 Commando where at the bottom there is a downloadable PDF file about No.9 Cdo overseas: http://www.commandoveterans.org/site/mambots/editors/fckeditor/editor/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=52&Itemid=

Enjoy your weekend at Lytham

If you are interested in a Broad Outline of the activities of each Commando you will find some details in War Diaries held at the National Archive (Public Record Office) Kew. From memory, one set of copies, for each Commando, can generally be found in the WO (War Office) 218 series. They vary in detail and volume, and as may be expected there is usually a separate file for each year, for each Commando (not always complete). Good hunting!
