Hi
My grandfather passed away this week and I'm trying to find out as much information as I can about him. He served in 9 Commando and I think I have a service number but will have to find that out.
Would anyone know a Frank Ronald Dixon or would anyone be kind enough to point me in the right direction?
Many thanks
Jo

Jo,
So sorry to hear about your Grandfather.
You say you're trying to find out any info on him? If you do have his service number, may I suggest you apply to get his Service Records.
That will give you an interesting framework to build on - Date of recruitment and attestation, courses, promotions, theatres/areas served in, discharge date etc.

I have just received my father's Service Records back from Army Historical Disclosures and have found them very interesting indeed.
I have to warn you though that there is some delay as there is a backlog of welfare applications that, of course, take precedence over general applications.
Regards and commiserations for your loss,
Nick

Thank you for your kind words it's really nice of you. I shall certainly try what you recommend as my brother and myself are really proud of my grandad and would like to pass this on throughout the family. My grandad used to tell us stories about his time with the Commando's (without my Nan knowing as she hated talking about the war) and I only wish now that I could remember all what he said.
We have found his service number and a membership card for a commando organisation that I shall try and contact so hopefully this should help. I also have a few photos of him in his army uniform which is great.
It's only when you lose someone that you really appreicate them and he
was my superman.
To all those that served, we are indebted to you.
Thanks for your help again.
Kind regards
Jo

Hi Jo, on behalf of the Commando Veterans Association please accept my deep condolences on the loss of you Grandad. The commando organisation that you have found a membership card for will have been the Commando Association (CA) that has now 'stood down'; we as the Commando Veterans Association (CVA) have taken over the baton from where they stood down. Unfortunately many of the old CA members may not have been informed of our existance and therefore did not have the chance to join. We are doing what we can to address this.
The Association is also open to Associate members and you are welcome to join us. We have many children through to great-great-grand children as members honouring the memory of their forefathers and very interested in the Commando history. Your Grandad was much a part of the Commando history and if you get a chance please upload a photograph of him onto the 9 Cdo page of our Gallery.
Our thoughts are with you in your time of sadness, however please remember that the memory of your Grandad will live on with the history of the Commandos.
Many kind regards
Geoff Murray
