I am currently researching the circumstances of the death of my Uncle - Gunner 1610143 Hubert Samual Wadsworth, Royal Artillery. He was posted to No: 3 Commando 4th July 1942 (aged 24) and participated in the Dieppe Raid on 19th August 1942.
Having survived the attack from German convoy and landing at Berneval (Yellow Beach 1) with Capt R. L. Wills of the Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry they reached the cliffs when Capt Wills was shot in the throat and passed out. Capt Wills was captured and the following year wrote to family to explain that Gunner Wadsworth's dead body was bought into a dressing station (not known where but presumed German) the morning after the raid.
Gunner Wadsworth is buried in a commonwealth war grave at Gamaches Communal Cemetary, France which is probably about 20 miles or so from Dieppe. At the moment we do not know what happened between the time Capt. Wills was shot and Gunner Wadsworth body being brought in to the dressing station the following morning.

Is anyone able to assist with further information?
Are there any surviving members of No 3 Commando who fought in the Dieppe raid?

Hi Geoff

I need to find where is the photo about 2 troop 3 cdo in 1942 ( before DIEPPE ).
We will move soon, and boxes are ready.
I will ask to my friend, how he received the information about the pillbox in Berneval, when your uncle has been killed. I can't understand why he is buried in GAMACHES.
I have a list ( confidential ) about the bodies "found" by the mayor of BERNEVAL after the raid, and your uncle is not on.

sincerely

Hello Stephane,

Best wishes with your move. I expect the photo is at the bottom of the biggest box!! :( There is no immediate rush. I look forward to receiving the information when you are not busy with moving.

Hello GEOFF

You know, I have a lot of boxes with many photos, documents, stories etc.. about veterans and those who never return home.
I begun at 13, now 41. So, you see a lot of information. The trouble is since four years i put all the documents in different boxes, no time.
But don't worry. i forget nothing. :-)

sincerely

stéphane
