Greg,
The Guards Regiments retain all the service records of ex-Guardsmen .
If you intend to apply for a copy Geroge's service record you will have to apply to;

Scots Guards R.H.Q.
Wellington Barracks
Birdcage Walk
London SW1E 6HQ
020 7414 3324
2nd Battalion Scots Guards war diary entry 10th April 1945

Moved off at 0700 to try and get a breakthrough in order to let the COLDSTREAM Group take the lead.
Order of march was Right Flank & 2 Squadron, G Company & 3 Squadron, and Left Flank and 1 Squadron, and F Company.
But much opposition from enemy infantry was encountered and the leading group was held up for some time at road junction 051541.
A company/squadron attack was laid on and G Company successfully captured the road junction and village beginning at 1400 hours.
An hour later Right Flank attacked NORTHWARDS and secured the bridge at 048549 which was unfortunately blown.
Later in the evening Left Flank and their squadron successfully attacked MENSLAGE (0553) burning down most of the village.
house 036536 During these small battles approximately 170 Prisoners were taken, the vast majority being from the Pioneer Battalion of 21 PARA REGIMENT.
During the night Left Flank patrolled SOUTHWARDS from MENSLAGE in order to clear the main C.L.
It was found clear and the ROYAL ENGINEERS at once got on with bridging operations.

Greg,
Was George's service number 3056044?
3056044 would suggest that he originally enlisted in the Royal Scots.

Graham & Nick,
The casualty list states 'Died', suggesting his death was the result of an illness. Moascar was a military camp alongside the Suez Canal, supporting Nick's thoughts that he was in transit when he was taken ill.

It would be possible to obtain an overseas death certificate which would confirm the actual cause of C.S.M. Johnson's death?

Paulo,
Lt. Miers appears in the 'Navy List' under 'The Royal Marine Forces'. He was a Royal Marine on a ship detachment, possibly landing craft?
The Distinguished Service Cross is "awarded in recognition of an act or acts of exemplary gallantry during active operations against the enemy at sea"
All would be confirmed with a copy of his service records

The signed bank notes are known by the Americans as a "short snorter". It was a tradition that was started by commercial pilots in the United States and was continued by members of the U.S. and British military during the war. The Apollo 11 crew carried signed $1 bills.

Are there signatures on the otherside that you can post?

Taff,
Tydfil also served North West Europe 1944-1945. The medal ribbon to the right of the Italy Star is the France Germany Star. There also appears to be an African Star ribbon partially obscured by the tunic collar.

Was he a professional boxer post-war?
Guy

Graham,
There were several other Royal Hampshire Regiment and 7 Commando captured on Crete with you father. He was held in Stalag IVF pow.no. 11949
