Pete & Stein,
Both men have a South Staffordshire Regiment cap badge. I believe that they were attached to 2nd Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment of the 1st Airborne Division. The 1st Airborne Divison were deployed to Norway during Operation Doomsday, they were to oversee the surrender of German forces.

Hi Nick,
Sorry, I forgot to add that!

1654813 L/Sgt. Iorweth Cyrus Thomas Royal Artillery (H.A.A.)

Guy
Lance Sergeant Iorweth Cyrus Thomas enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1940. He volunteered for Commando training and joined 3 Commando.
He was a Section Leader in 6 Troop, 3 Commando and landed in the second wave at Agnone on 13/14th July 1943. The objective of the landing was the capture of Punta Dei Malati, which carried Highway 114 over the Leonardo river.
When 3 Commando's position became untenable due to heavy German counter-attacks, they were forced to make a fighting withdrawal from the bridge.
Your uncle was taken prisoner during this withdrawal on the morning of the 14th July.
He was initially sent to Capua 66 and was then transferred to Stalag IVB Mühlberg, Germany. He remained there until liberated on the 17th April 1945.
