Hello Nina,
Your father was a Police Constable serving with 'E' Division of the Metropolitan Police. The Metropolitan Police released a cadre of men who had volunteered for service in the Armed Forces on the 20th May 1943.
Do you remember where your father was billeted prior to D-Day?

Andrew,
Your grandfather originally enlisted in the Royal Artillery prior to volunteering for the Commandos. His cap badge on his beret is a Royal Artillery collar badge. Many Commandos chose to use the smaller collar badge than the full size Royal Artillery cap badge.
There are three John Sheldons who enlisted in the Royal Artillery between 1940 and 1942.
You will be able to apply for his military service records with only his full name and date of birth.
The Commando you have identified in the Normandy photograph is Frank Barton of 6 Commando.
Good luck with your research

Hi Phil,
MIDDLETON Frank Leonard Lance Sergeant 7902963 R.A.C. & 4 Commando
28th January 1920 - 4Q 1986 Great Yarmouth, Norfolk
I'm not sure about the Sheffield connection, he seems to have been born in Yarmouth. In 1939 he is listed as a plater's helper in a shipyard, residing in Great Yarmouth.
You could obtain his tracer card from the Tank Museum at Bovington, that would give you a summary of his military service?
How goes the second book?

Can anyone help me decipher the attached please?
This is your grandfather's entry in the Royal Artillery attestation records.
877004 KNOWLES Kenneth Gunner
Enlisting in the Territorial Army in 1938, he joined the 65th Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery. This unit was based in Manchester.
Paragraph 204 (XV) Territorial Army Regulations refers to his discharge on the 28th August 1939. The reason for his discharge suggests that he had enlisted into another branch of the Armed Services.
Good luck with your research.
