Dieppe 1942
Hi. I'm trying to find information about my father's involvement in the Dieppe Raid.
From what he told me when I was about 10 yrs old, he would have been about 40 yrs old then. He came over from Athlone, Southern Ireland, he would have been in his teens. He trained at "Ringway" as a parachutist. He took a bullet to the stomach at Dieppe and was evacuated back to England.
Later in his life, as with so many, he throw away anything he had relating to the war and spoke no more of it. His name was Cecil (Pat/Paddy) McCormack. Born 21/01/1923.
I recently went on a Commando's Battle field tour, spending a day at Dieppe. Our guide "Ben" thought that Dad would have been with No4 Commando's. As their campaign "Cauldron" was considered a victory and therefore he would have been more likely to be evacuated from the beaches near Varengeville.
I have tried to find reference of his time in the British army, but with no success, I don't even know which regimen he joined or where he was recruited, whether in Ireland or England?
I would be grateful for any information or guidance.
Thanks
Geoff McCormack.
