Hi, I got my grandad's military record some years ago and I've never been able to work out what he did for the Commandos. He was known as "Ray" (Raymond John) despite being Alfred Henry Martin. He worked as a military policeman overseas in India in between the wars and during WW2 before being at Holding Operational Commando in Wrexham. He died when I was very young but we believe he did "something" with the Commandos and his discharge reference refers to a recent special assignment with the commandos later in 1945 but I've gotten stuck trying to figure out what this could have been. His army number was 5670951 and his date of birth was registered as 25/08/15 when he joined up (despite his birth certificate showing it as 1913). I've struggled to upload some excerpts from his service history and I'd be grateful for any pointers to help me research what he actually did do. He never really talked about this other than when he wasn't very well after a stroke and mentioned something about climbing down a mountain but we have no idea if this really happened! Thank you so much in advance Ruth

Hi Ruth

I have emailed you back after you sent the extracts from the Service Record with an explanation of what is written on the testimonial where it mentions your grandfather as being "Highly recommended for 'the Force' or to any other civilian employer", the Force being the Police Force. I have added an entry referencing your grandfather's service at the Holding Operational Commando. Feel free to email me back with a photo of your grandfather if you wish. Pete
