The words of his posthumous Mention in Despatches says it all. Unlike today in WW2 if a soldier was killed in action the only recognition by award for gallantry, other than the Victoria Cross, was a posthumous Mention in Despatches.

When the danger is passed and all things righted, God is forgotten, and the Soldier slighted.
