Whilst watching a film about the 1963 Train Robbery I was reminded that one of the investigating officers may be of interest to the CVA
Detective Chief Superintendent Tommy Butler led the six man Train Robbery Squad. His second in command was Detective Inspector Frank Williams.I can recall reading somewhere that Frank Williams was a wartime commando. Is this correct? or have I identified the wrong police officer.
Regards,
Barry Wales

Hi Barry,
According to the BBC, "DI Frank Williams was formerly a sergeant major with an Army Commando unit in Italy, during World War Two..."
I would be very interested in any further evidence of this.

Barry,
I have contacted the Met
police history group , who have confirmed that D.I Frank Williams did serve in the commandos.
The confirmation states "Served as a L?/SGT or S?/SGT IN 9 Commando from 22/7/42 to 27-1-46.Service No 14241758".

Thanks Graham,
Great Detective work there (pun wholly intended)...
I'm pleased to say that we already had L/Sgt F Williams in the No9 Cdo Nominal Roll - I have now amended the entry to reflect his full details.
