Hi All

I attended the funeral of Harry Winch last week and on arriving a little early got to chat with Norris Pickford the designer of the Alrewas memorial.

He reminded me of the coded number we included in the making of the main centre piece.

We were at Anwick forge and discussing various symbols and symbolism in general and decided to try and include a number symbol into our design. We discussed various candidates and arrived at the number 170........re Hill 170.

This is how we incorporated that number into the design.

The word Commando appears twice in copper = 8 letters per word = 16

The rivets fixing the words to the centre piece = ...............................50

The copper leaves surrounding the knife =.........................................104

Coded number 170...... remembering Hill 170

We had recounted this to Harry one year at the memorial service..........and he thought it was fantastic.

Info for posterity.

Regards

John M
