Hello, I am interested in finding the names of all the men that landed on Yellow Beach II with Peter Young. Can anyone point me in the direction of a source? I have already checked Peter Young's book.

Many thanks in advance

Reply a bit late coming, but have only just registered.
The names are given in book by N. Bucourt et al "Raid de Dieppe", Heimdal, 2012, page 81. 20 names are given in all, which I think accounts for everyone who landed on Yellow 2.

Not sure if anyone has a copy of the book mentioned. As I understand it there were only 20 men landed on yellow 2.

I would be keen to see the list, as my late father was in 3 Commando, and I believe he was at Dieppe, as those who landed at Yellow 1 were captured or killed, I am thinking, maybe, he was one of those on Yellow 2

According to "Raid de Dieppe" by Bucourt, Fihue, Jeanne and Masson (Heimdal, 2012) - page 81, the following landed at Yellow 2:

HQ Group
Major Young
Lieutenant Ruxton
Signaller Sayers
Signaller Meakins
Private Clark
Private Craft
Private Hopkins
Private Mulholland
Lance-Corporal White
Private Adderton
Private Dodd
Private Parsons
Private Saggers

3 Troop
Captain Selwyn
Lance-Corporal Bennett
Private Lilley
Private Mason
Private Abbott
Private Cunningham
Private Nicholas

Total 20 men

Hope this helps

Thanks for the quick update Noel.

So, Father was not on Yellow 2. It was along time ago (1960's) he finally started talking about his WW2 exploits.

I never had much detail about Dieppe. It maybe that he either discussed it in terms of 3 Commando, or he may have been on one of the craft that had to turn back.

Also, as he was wounded at St Nazaire in the March, I wonder if he was even fit by August to go to Dieppe.

In any case, thanks for the update on Yellow II. All those men were special, those 20 men were something extra special.

Regards, Paul

I have finally come across my Father's memoirs that has been floating around the family.

He wrote this whilst in Oflag 9A, after being wounded and captured at Arnhem.

It is not clear if he wrote about Dieppe in the 3rd person.

"August 19th ,1942 - Commando raid with No4 and large Canadian force on DIEPPE Heavy losses of our commando, t?? 'party' with E Boats just of French coast. About half of Commando only returned to England (Newhaven) Maj Young D.S.O."

Further confusion is that, listed in his 'Officer?s Record of Service' booklet, it clearly shows Dieppe as one of his activities.

No 3 Commando - June '40 to Sept '44
Lofoton Islands
Vaagso
St Nazaire
Dieppe
Nornandy
Arnhem

So, I am still confused, could he have gone with No 4 Commando?

Paul

This was the list of No 4 Commando at Dieppe.

Best wishes.

Hi Bill,
I have done a lot more research on this and I am still unsure of my father's involvement or not at Dieppe.

Looking at the link you sent, the list is titled 'A partial nominal roll for Dieppe'. I am guessing because it is titled 'partial nominal' that it is not complete.

I will continue to research, and get back here if I get any new information.

Thanks, Paul

BTW, here is an image of his Record of Service

Ok, so I did some more research, and from my Father's diaries, I know he was in No1 Troop, 3 Commando at their formation. He then lists his theatres of operation in his 'Record of Service' Book as I described above.

I have just found the following link in Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No._3_Commando#Dieppe .

Here it notes "In August 1942 No. 3 Commando was involved in the ill-fated Operation Jubilee, an exploratory raid on Dieppe in France....."

"however, they had a chance encounter with a German tanker escorted by a number of armed trawlers which proceeded to fire upon them. In the confusion that followed a number of the landing craft were damaged and forced to turn back, while others were reported as missing and believed sunk. As a result the decision was made to abandon the attack"

It seems that the 7 missing LCs went on to make the beaches, so I am wondering if he was in the remainder of the fleet of landing craft that returned to port?

I wonder if there is a list somewhere of all those who set off?

Hi Paul

Does the document you posted cover his entire record of service from enlistment on other pages ? It looks like it may be a Regimental record. I know your father was wounded at St. Nazaire so are there pages that record this wounding amongst a date timeline ? Dates and references of him being taken off strength units, or taken on strength, promotions before his commission etc etc. ? Most full service records would have this detail somewhere. It would be interesting to see the page or any entries specifically relating to the period between March and August 1942 which should be on the full service record.
