Hi Steph I also have a photo the same same man sat at the front wearing a beret and the Norfolk Regiment badge...........only problem is I dont know which commando he is with! Anyway this gentleman is very tall about 6' 5 at a guess.

It appears to of taken before or just afer D-Day as there are commando assault vests in the background.

Hello

Is it possible for you to send me the full photo ?
It could be capt. HUNTER GRAY.
It's sure the photo has been taken in Holland.

Hi Steph,

I am in the process of scanning all the photos I have.

The problem with this photo is that a lot of people in it look like a lot of famous people. Take for example the man with a cross above his head he looks like Major Porteus VC!

Sorry I know nothing about this photo, there is nothing written on it. More Unknown Commando's I`m afraid.

Hello

Yes it's not easy to recognise someone. Do you know if it was in Holland or Germany.
The man with the cross is not Pat PORTEOUS VC. He join the airborne forces after the Normandy Campaign.
I will show the photo to the veterans and maybe we could have information.
Where have you got this photo ?

cheers

Sorry Steph I know nothing about this photo. The seller knew nothing of its origins. Its a nice photo none the less.

I think the way to identify this photo is to find out exactly what and where that tower is in the background?

Is is something for parachute training, is it a climbing frame, is it something to do with radio? I`m sure if someone was there they would remember it.

Steve.

:D Steph sounds like a lot of trouble for just a postcard. Facial hair is a funny thing in the British Army. Ive found that officers who belonged to certain units all used to wear a uniform style of facial hair, which makes them very hard to distinguish who is who unless you look very closely.

Please check your PM box in the next few days I shall ne sending you many more photos for you to print off and put on your wall.

Hi Stephane,
I came across this thread and I do not think the one with the beret in the front is Lt. Hunter-Gray. In my opinion Lt. Hunter-Gray is in the second row, second from the left.
I also think that next to him is Sgt. Gordon Dennis (Welsh Guards).
The commando with the beret on the back row, second from the right is Sgt. van der Wal in my opinion. He was a dutchman from No10 Commando and asigned to N0.2 Troop since November 1st 1944.
Back row in the middle sitting right from the rifles is Cpl Maybury.
This thanks to Major Dunning in his book the Fighting Fourth.
He also claims it was taken 18 January 1945 at the Schouwen raid.
Kind regards
Ron
