The CVA recently received an enquiry from Mark Holding Treasurer Nottingham Branch The Parachute Regimental Association. I have listed part of his email below:
I am trying to find out if there is any way of tracing which Army Commando Unit Fredrick Raymond Aldous served with. His Son Neil Aldous said that he was a Wartime Army Commando and transferred to the Parachute Regiment after the War, serving in Palestine. I think that this was a result of the Army Commandos being disbanded. Fred originally came from the West Midlands as far as I know, so I am not sure if the Commandos had catchments areas or not, like some of the Parachute Regiment Battalions did? Fred must have seen some bad things in service because he never spoke much of what he did, apart from making ten parachute descents, but we don't know if this was with the Commandos, or after joining The Parachute Regiment, or both. Fred died on the 7th of April 2010, so we can't find out through Fred any more, and the search is made harder, as we don't yet have an Army serial number to go by. It would be nice to find out Fred's Commando Unit History and be able to enter him in the Pegasus Journal memorial page for service to the Parachute Regiment and any equivalent Commando journal for his service with the Army Commandos.

I am pleased to say that with the help of Ron Youngman, former National Secretary to the original Commando Association, I have been able to respond with the following details about Frederick :
I have now found out a bit about Frederick from the records of the original Commando Association which stood down in 2005. His parent Regiment was the Worcestershire Regt. and he is shown as joining No.4 Commando in December 1944. He is shown as being a Private. I would just point out that these details are simply from the Associations original membership records, and not official Government records. His Regiment would be right for his West Midlands origins you mentioned. Hope this helps. If you do ultimately post anything in the Pegasus journal I would be interested in a copy and a photo of him to post on our site

My thanks to Ron Youngman for his help. Mark has promised he will send us copies of any photos or information about Fred that he gets. If anyone has any knowledge of Frederick Raymond Aldous please place it here and I will pass the message on

Rest in peace Fred
