Hello All,

This is my first posting but I am a regular visitor to the site. I am an amateur military historian who for the last year and a half has been researching the life of the commando leader Lord Lovat. I would be interested to hear any stories that anyone has about his lordship.

I've read almost every book I could about the Commandos and researched material in libraries and museums, but without doubt the best information comes from those who were there. So far I've spoken with such veterans as; Bill Millin, Stan Scott, Vincent Osbourne, Peter Taylor, and James Dunning. I've also corresponded with Richard Todd, Leon Guatier and Mdme Gondree.

What started off as a simple question 'What did Lovat really wear on D-Day?' has turned into a fascinating research project whereby I have met some humbling veterans whose stories and memories have only strengthened my respect and endeared me to this rare breed of men.

Thanks
Steve Hambridge

I have two copies of his book March Past, one signed by the author. He wrote very well about his early life and about the first few years of the war. He starts off D-Day writing from his own perspective but then hands off story to three other writers. I would have liked to understand his command and fighting tactics around Amfreville in his own words. A useful main source and excellent reference to my later studies.

I have promised Geoff Murray to write a brief article on Lovat for this website, sorry Geoff, but I am still researching - I'll do it soon (promise)!

Steve

Ive got several original unpublished photos of Lord Lovat. One of him in tropical uniform which was gifted to a fellow officer.

I made a thread about Lord Lovats CSM, Ive got a photo of him standing next to him as well as the photo attached to that thread. Its hard to believe they didnt know each other, no one the forum can identify him. I would of thought Lord Lovats CSM would of been one of the most well known CSM's of the Commandos, guess I was wrong about that.

I don't know if I'm being a little obtuse - and I hope you don't take this the wrong way - but I don't understand what you've posted...

Please can you make it simpler for me ?

No problem.

This is a thread I created regarding a CSM on this forum:

http://www.commandoveterans.org/cdoForum/posts/list/327.page

I have a second photo of this man stood next to Lord Lovat. I am trying to identify that CSM.

For this CSM to have a photo taken stood next to Lord Lovat would suggest a relationship of some kind.

Thank you.
