Good evening,

I'm seeking information regarding my late stepfather, John 'Jack' Brewerton and his service in Commando/Special Forces in WWII. From the little my step-sister and I know he joined the London Irish Regiment just before the outbreak of WWII and volunteered to man Anti-aircraft defences at Dunkirk during the evacuation. On returning from there, he volunteered for service in the Commandos and we believe joined No. 2 Commando but was posted/left this unit before Operation Chariot.

We think he then saw service in some sort of Special Forces unit in the Middle East, Mediteranean, and the Balkans (where he was wounded) before ending the war in 1945 in Northern Italy. Following his death a few years ago, a number of WWII Commando/Special Forces veterans attended his funeral.

Unfortunately, this is the sum total of what I know and would welcome hearing from anyone please with any information or possible sources.

Thanks
JP

Hi and welcome to the CVA. You state a few things about your stepfather which by the way you word it suggests the source came from family rather than official. With that in mind I would recommend you apply for his army service record which may give you some information to point you in the right direction:

There was a 22 month period between Dunkirk and St Nazaire. In 1940 the Independent Companies were formed and these became Special Service Battallions which in 1941 were reformed into the Commandos. On my fathers service record all these movements were noted. So I would recommend you apply. In the meantime I hope someone on here has more information for you.

Regards
