Met up today with a sprightly 89 year old Walter Ainslie who was in my father's troop in No.2 . He lives in Edinburgh and we had a great chat about the Commandos. He joined No.2 as part of the replacements after St Nazaire and was with them throughout the rest of the war being demobbed in 1946. He was kind enough to lend me a fair number of his photos which I have scanned and will put in the No.2 Cdo 5 troop album soon. Here's a couple of them. The rest are just as good.
His name can be seen in my father's notebook that he kept of 5 troop which is posted in the gallery. Here is a link to the page with walter's name on:

Well I have put some more of the photos that Walter so kindly gave us in the 5 Troop sub album of No.2 Cdo. They can be found on this link to the 5 troop sub album. I have managed to enhance the quality, removing scratches etc, of all of his photos and Walter has supplied most of the names bar a few. 5 troop has a great album of individual pictures now, as has 2 Cdo. In fact the CVA Gallery as a whole is fast approaching the 2,000 picture mark ! 50 or so more needed. There are a few more photos of Walter's to go in including a Troop picture of fine quality and to which he has put most of the names. Credit for many of 5 Troop's pictures must go to Ben Fryer and Pete McGinley who were avid photographers and could find film almost anywhere. I have asked Walter to join the CVA but I get the feeling he's a one Association man, that being the former Commando Association. He'll probably be reading this on Monday so I won't mention that I'll ask him again when I see him next month !
