He was part of the first Police intake in 1942. He was badly wounded on 6th June 1944 in Ouistreham and mentioned in despatches in February 1945 in Walcheren. He was later released back to Norwich City Police. Like all members of those intakes, he had no parent regiment but was allowed to "adopt" the Royal Norfolk Regiment.
