71 years ago this week on the 18th December 1949 Fred Brooking died of illness aged 28. Fred was a former Private and one of the early volunteers who joined No.4 Commando from the Gloucestershire Regiment taking part in many of their operations including Dieppe. There was a newspaper article about his passing which I have always found rather sad.
Here is the entry for Private Alfred Brooking in our archive:
Pete Rogers, son of LSgt Joe Rogers MM & nephew of TSM Ken McAllister. Both No2 Commando.
God and the Soldier, all men adore, In time of danger and not before.
When the danger is passed and all things righted, God is forgotten, and the Soldier slighted.
