Hi , I am looking for any information on my GGF James Henry Broad. (22644) he was a Sergeant Major with 46 RM Commando. Any information, stories , pictures would be gratefully received. I have a photo of him but not sure if it was with he was with 46Rm commando. He was in the Military Police in the 1950s in Portland and Malta. I am having difficulties finding this information though. Thanks in advance.

Hello Andrew
There are references to your Great Grandfather in both our 46RM Commando nominal roll and also in the extracts from the Navy Lists for that Commando. These can be found here:

http://www.commandoveterans.org/46CommandoNomRollAtoD

http://www.commandoveterans.org/46RMCommandoOfficers_Jun1944

http://www.commandoveterans.org/46RMCdoOfficers_Oct1944

The latter two indicate that he was the Senior Sergeant Major (or RSM) of 46RM Commando at that time. You may wish to browse our 46RM Commando gallery (if you have not already done so) as quite a few men in the photos are yet to be identified. Here is an example:

http://gallery.commandoveterans.org/cdoGallery/v/units/Royal+Marine+Commando+Units/46/Sgts+major.jpg.html

I have also found reference to I believe your Great Grandfather in a copy of the Globe and Laurel dated November 1944 although it does name him as Johnny Broad but everything else fits. It relates to a visit to the Sergeants Mess at Plymouth. We have your Grandfathers full service number as PLY/X 22644, the PLY being Plymouth so that also fits.

It would be great if you posted the photo of your Great Grandfather. Once done I will add it to our Gallery and if you provide more detail I will include that also. For instance his date and place of birth and date died (if applicable).

Any problems with the photo just email me direct (see email link below).

Hello Pete,
Thank you for your reply. It has been very helpful in piecing together more of his career . I will upload photographs later today. I have been through the gallery for 46 RM . I think I have spotted somebody in the gallery who could be James Broad I gave his Royal Marine service record from 1925 to 1951. Hopefully I can , with guidance if I become stuck , find further references, mentions and or pictures on this site or lead me in the direction of to get as detailed as possible timeline of events to 1951 and beyond.

Hi Andrew

Thank you for your reply however the size of the photos you posted are extremely small in resolution. Are you able to scan the originals at a high resolution (best quality setting) and email me them (see email link below). That way they will display better hopefully on the website.

Hi Pete,
Unfortunately I'm having trouble with the photos. I've found the original site on which I stumbled across it . However that site is no longer loading. I will persevere and try and find a way to send picture when I am able .
Kind Regards
Andrew
