70 years ago, on the 21st May 1948, the Combined Services Memorial at Westminster Abbey was unveiled by the Right Honourable Sir Winston Churchill KG PC. It is well worth a visit if you have never been there. There is a small service at the memorial each year on Remembrance weekend.

The inscription below the bronze figure depicting a Commando reads
To the Glory of God and in memory of all ranks of the Commandos who fell in the Second World War 1939-1945. They performed whatsoever the King commanded.

When the danger is passed and all things righted, God is forgotten, and the Soldier slighted.

Son of Gunner Bill Harvey No4 Commando who was killed in action on 1 November 1944 when liberating Flushing. "Their deeds shall live from age to age. They've writ their name on History's page. Upheld their glorious heritage. The Fighting Fourth Commando."
