We recently came across a kit bag at a military fair which had supposedly got his green beret and medals in the bottom of it, we can't find any info on C V Stone and wondered if its a genuine kit bag ?

Says he was a bugler HQ troop 44 rm commando

Any help much appreciated, can't attach the photo for some reason :(

your image file is probably too big. Try re-sizing. If unable, email image to me or Pete Rogers...

Not sure if this helps or not,I have a reference to a Cpl,Charles (Rocky),STONE,44 RM Cdo,of Cannington,Somerset.

He has been shown as a dispatch rider.(not confirmed)

In March 1997 it is noted that his death was reported.

Like I said earlier not sure if this is the same STONE,

Good luck

Graham

Ok thank you - does the kit bag look genuine ? Haven't seen one before and you don't come across many 44 RM Commando items?

Apologies for not replying sooner, Sue, I was down in West Wales with no mobile signal or wifi...

The file was very large but I have resized it.
Yes it looks to be the genuine article to me.

Kit bag looks great, there is an Army Cdo kit bag in the West Highland museum, that belonged to Eric Groves, 2 Cdo.
The beret looks like it might have a silk band as opposed to leather which would make it post war.

It does look like a silk band and not leather, would this mean that it could've been a later replacement? Also would the army commando berets have been different to the marine berets? Good to know that the kit bag looks genuine though, thank you for sharing your knowledge

Hi
RM and Army cdo berets were exactly the same in WWII. The leather band disappeared in the late 40s. RMs sometimes added a stiffener to the front behind the badge, but I saw the beret is also missing its liner again a post war trait.
Most veterans after the war replaced their berets, with tidier, cleaner ones for remembrance parades etc. These proud men wouldn't want to be seen in decades old tatty uniform on parade!
You still have a lovely set of items, well done
cheers
Paul
