Ron,
Yes I too have trouble with the black/blue!

Ok, once again you've come up with a feasible explanation - my dad's portrait shows him with a Combined Ops whilst he was a Lance Jack whereas I know he finished as a Sgt so that could be right, chronologically.
Unfortunately that's really thrown out by the illustration from Men At War, 1914 - 1945, British Army Commandos where the Sgt is supposed to be dressed to take part in the St Nazaire Raid, 1942 and the crossed daggers are clearly shown on his left shoulder.
Some supporting text explains that "all insignia other than badges of rank were ordered to be removed prior to the St Nazaire Raid... photographs of survivors as prisoners of war show that not all of the No 5 Commando group removed their V patches..."

Ive just been checking through my bits and bobs of my dad's commando items i keep in a green box and theres a clipping from the Daily Express saturday November15th 1941 Theres the photo of a soldier's shoulder and on it is the 1st issue badge of the Crossed daggers and the V . Above theres a Commando flash but because of a crease in the jacket its hard to see the number but it looks like a 5 Commando but theres no No.5. Underneath it is written" See a soldier with the badge above on his shoulder and you see one of the toughest men in the toughest army in the world--- a Commando"
I shall try and photo it with my didgie camera
Also I have a teatowel that i bought from the Commando Ass. years ago it has all the unit badges and no5 has its flash as 5 Commando in yellow and black with the green and yellow crossed daggers and V ( 2nd issue) underneath

Stephen,
That tea towel sounds interesting - pictures?
BUT now you've introduced a 5 Commando , on black, into the equation too!

Also can you illustrate or explain (again) the difference between the 1st issue and 2nd issue 'V and Crossed daggers'? - I think I'm being a bit thick as I didn't quite grasp your first explaination.

Regards,
Nick

I don't know if all this confusion re badges was delibrate - to confuse the enemy, but it's certainly confusing me...

Stephen,
I still can't distinguish between 1st and 2nd issue - other than maybe the colour of the handles?

Cheers,
Nick

Although I started this thread with a query whether No 5 had a Cap Badge, it was soon established that they probably didn't so the discussion moved on to No 5's badges and patches in general.
As the author of the thread I don't have a problem with that and have contributed quite a bit to this interesting and puzzleing question.
Thanks,
Nick

you cant see the crossed daggers very clearly on his beret but on the actual photo you can
I 'll bring the original photo to the 29th July gathering .and you can have a look. I had this enlarged on the computer and a rip in the photo erased

Stephen,
Good, but can you tell me the difference between the two issues of the crossed daggers, please mate?
Am I anywhere close with my theory of the handles?

Cheers,
Nick
