Hi

48 RM nominal roll, currently Chrisp, full name, Charles Frederick Chrisp
Service No: POX/104219 (T)

Charlie is my granddad. I have just started to try and follow his movements whilst in the Royal Marines. I know he was in Egypt in 1943 but unfortunately that is all I am currently aware of.

Any information would be great.

Thank you

Janette

Hi Janette

I am sure you have found this entry in our Archive about 48RM Commando https://www.commandoveterans.org/48RMCommando

To find out more about his military service you should apply for a copy of his service records. How to do so can be found below:

If you, or anyone else in your Family, have a photo of your Granddad that you would like included in our gallery (see below) please post it in a response on this forum thread. Our gallery can be found below:

Hi Janette

I have posted the photo of your grandfather and others wearing the beret into our 48RM Commando gallery - here is a direct link to it https://gallery.commandoveterans.org/cdoGallery/v/units/Royal+Marine+Commando+Units/48+RM+Cdo/Charles+Chrisp+RM_Group+_1_.jpg.html

If you care to leave your last name I will add that to the credit shown.

The 1943 image was before his time in the Commandos. Unlike today in WW2 not all Royal Marines were Commando trained.

I hope this is the right place to submit some additional information about an individual in the nominal role for No 9 Commando. This relates to my father Dr Charles William Gillespie, RAMC. He was born 29 March 1918 and qualified as a doctor from Queen's University Belfast in 1941.

He enlisted in November 1942 as Lt CW Gillespie, 252038, and served from May 1943 with BNAF in Tunisia and Italy (106 Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery ). He was promoted Captain on 7 November 1943.

He joined No 9 Commando around April or May 1944 and served with them in Italy and Greece, undergoing parachute training in March 1945. I believe he remained with the unit until Aug 1945, although he may have transferred following the unit's return to Italy from Greece in the spring of 1945.

I attach a photo which was taken in 1944.

He died on 17 November 1955 aged 37.

Thanks Alan for this and in particular for the source. I have updated the archive with these. I have over the last week been adding more to the archive on those who served in Layforce from information available in the Casualty Lists and POW Lists.
