Can anyone supply any information on the following, or perhaps tell me of sources whereby I could find out this information,

I am trying to establish the activities, whereabouts or movements of my late father L/sgt Terence Raymond John WAKELY, during World War 2.
He was part of 6 commando and served between 23/07/1942 and 19/11/1945. His service number was 14241620 ( Welch ) and he was from the Cardiff ( Wales ) area.
He was part of the landing forces on Sword beach on D Day and also served in a body guard detachment for General Montgomery. He also saw action in the Black Forest were he was wounded. This is all that I know.

Please contact me if you think that you have anything which may help.

Lynda Flynn ( nee Wakely ) daughter.

Hi Lynda,
Welcome to the CVA Forums
You do seem to know a fair bit about your father's service already, so that's a good start.

I would always recommend that you apply to the MoD for a copy of your father's service records.
There is a search fee of £30 and there will be a fairly lengthy delay but it's all worth it in the end.

The records will show details of enlistment, training, transfer to Commandos, promotions (and demotions), postings, theatres of operations, woundings, hospitalisations, demob etc.,

Should you wish to persue this avenue of enquiry, I can forward the appropriate forms to you.

Obviously as you already know he was in No6 Cdo, I would suggest you have a good browse through the No6 Commando album in our Gallery to see if you can spot him amongst the many excellent photos sent in by our members.

I can also recommend the No6 Commando website - which has a photo of your father (cropped from a larger, group photo)

Hope this is of help and I look forward to working with you to find out more about your father.

Hello Lynda,
You can read the on-line war diaries for D-Day for N°6 Commando on the Pegasus Archice web site:
http://www.pegasusarchive.org/normandy/frames.htm
LH column click on "War Diaries"
Scroll down and under "1st Special Service Brigade" click on "N°6 Commando"
Enjoy

Do you have any photos of your father that you could share with us on this site.

I'm pleased to say that we do have a photo of Lynda's father, L/Sgt Wakely, as one of Monty's bodyguards.

Hopefully Lynda will be able to identify him on some other photos soon.
