I found this article in The Times.

Unbelievable.

I bet this would make a nice little addition to a newsletter and make a few people laugh.

Hi

There is a book written about this escapade:

The Amateur Commandos
By Raymond Foxall
Published 1980
Hale

Humorous read and quite tragic in the end.

Regards
John M

HELLO

It's strange, i've got the book " The Fighting Fourth " by Jimmy DUNNING, open at the page 98/99. And this is about Peter KING and Cuthbertson.

Ah so they are famous. Were there any other men who tried to do the same thing?

Steve.

Hello Steph

It is quite a rare book...........and very hard to get a hold of........I have several Book Dealer friends .........would you like me to try and source it for you?

It will be no trouble at all.

Regards

John M

You could also try online but I think you will be very lucky to get it.

Hello Steve

Well one was fairly famous. Sgt King was later Commissioned into the Commandos served in the Lovat Scouts was awarded an MC and was recommended for the VC and was awarded the DSO as a Captain and ended up a Major.

He was tragically killed in a road accident in 1962.

Cuthbertson ended up as Deputy Lord Mayor of Tyne And Wear Council and later was a very successful businessman.

The old Commando spirit hey :D

Also the subject of a recent film loosely based on their exploits: Two Men Went To War.

The script takes a few liberties: King, who was reportedly 27 in 1942, is portrayed as a grizzled WW1 veteran, wounded at Passchendaele while changing the tyre on a staff car; and they become involved by coincidence in a Parachute Regiment raid on a Nazi radar station, loosely based on the Bruneval Raid.

Quite a good fun film nonetheless.
Cheers,
Mark

Remembering Tom McCormack, died of wounds, Bill Hughes and Syd Murdoch both captured, all at St Nazaire and all Liverpool Scottish/QOCH & 5(Scottish) Troop, No 2 Commando. Wonderful company & welcome guests billeted with my grandfather in Ayr in 1941-2.
