Hi All,

Just wondered about the service certificates/scroll, when were these issued? Did you have to apply or where they automatically given? I ask as i have not seen my grandfathers certificate.

Also I read with interest that a certificate was issued by the French Government to Army Commandos who were involved in the Dieppe Raid, how do I apply for one?

Hi Mark,

With regard to the Commando Service Certificate, these were issued by the Commandos at the end of the War.

Although I remember seeing my father's certificate it has 'disappeared' over the years and so I resorted to reproducing one (as did Andy Maines).

My father ended his service with the commandos at HOC Wrexham and it was from here that his cert would have been issued.

I am very pleased with the result and have 'issued' my mother and all my siblings with copies...

Its a very good copy Nick. I noticed on my Dads though it states the countries he served in under the Chief of Combined Operations signature, not the period he served.

Is this unusual?

Hi Nigel,

I don't know if it is particularly unusual but of the dozen or so that I've seen most, not all, tend to just have the dates served.

I suppose it depended on the person who filled out the certificates at the time...
Even Service Records vary greatly as to the person who entered the details into the records!

Thanks Nick, the information is great. I will have a whirl at the commando service certificate and my grandads Dieppe certificate is on its way once I make a £5 donation to the Commando Benovolent fund, fantastic!!!

Mark,
If it helps, I downloaded a free Font called 'Underwood Champion' which I think is perfect for that era.

Hi Mark

As Nick has stated I too have had to carry out some work regarding my father's certificate, except in my case I have actually got my father's original Commando service certificate, however as you will see from the link it was in a terrible condition and contained a number of typing errors.
My approach was slightly different in that I was able to correct these errors by copying existing letters or numbers. However I was not able to employ this method for all of the missing / incorrect info, so I actually made the missing letters from existing ones ie the capital H for my father's initial.

Cheers Andy
