As you say a great send off for a real 'Gentle'man.

As Vic always used to say 'We hope he had a dry landing'

God Bless you Vic.

Yours Aye
HI Stephen
To help you out the comic number is:

July 8th 1961 No 20.

It's an early one so may cost a bit in good condition.
Happy hunting
John M
Hi Everyone

You probably all know this but here goes anyway.

The old Victor comic among others ran features on VC winners and covered several Commando VC winners.

Lt G Knowland VC ( Burma) No 1 Commando is shown here. But they also ran Harden VC (Europe) 45 Rm Commando and Durrant Vc( St Nazaire) No 1 Commando and maybe more.
They make interesting things to collect ..Keep your eyes peeled for them at book fairs etc
Cheers everyone
John M
Thanx Stephen

Sometimes you just have to put down your feelings down on paper.

When we visit the monumemt it still has the same effect on us.

Maybe we will meet in the future at Spean Bridge.

Which unit was your father in?

Your verse is also beautifully dignified.....and speaks a truth we should not forget.

regards
John M

Hi Ann
Heres the address to write to for Navy records:

Naval Pay & Pensions (Accounts),*
Ministry of Defence,
Centurion Building,
Grange Road,
Gosport,
Hampshire PO13 9XA.

John M

Yes

They should be published in the London Gazette.

You can research it online. You need to have a rough idea of the date awarded. If you have your dads service record it should be in there.

John M
Hi Ann
You have my heartfelt sympathy.
My Dad also died young in 1977 aged 55yrs.
He also was modest and quiet about his wartime service.
It was only later when I researched into it that I realised what he had endured.

You can only look back wth admiration and pride.

Regards
John M
Hi Ann

DSM =DistinguishedService Medal
CGM =Conspicuous Gallantry Medal
Both awarded for acts of bravery.

Your dad was a real hero.

Best regards
John M
Vic
It was a great pleasure to have known and talked with you,to have drank and laughed and been a small part of your life.

One of a rare breed with real humility and kindness.

A true 'Gentle'man.

Rest in peace Vic
John & Bernie Mewett

Hello Steve
I can't help with any info about your dad particularly but would draw your attention to a very good book covering the Crete operations.

Title: Crete...The Battle and Resistance
Author: Antony Beevor
Pub : Penquin 1991

If you haven't already read it it's worth a look.

Regards
JohnM
Hi Bob

You are both an inspiration to us all.

A great photo of you both.

The Commando spirit shines through :-)

John M

Hi again Lindsay

Another fabulous photo.

I think this is a troop from No 2 Commando who wore the Tams for all ranks.
I know Bob will correct if I am wrong :)

Regards
John M

Hi Lindsay

Nothing to do with the badge...........although it shows it very clearly but I'd thought I'd say what a fabulous picture of Lt Cln Newman VC.

It really is a great portrait of him.

Best wishes
John M

Hi Everyone

This I believe is a rare old pic in that it depicts my dad Bob Mewett (left) No 12 Cdo with his landlady Mrs Lake (centre) when in civvie billets in Dorchester? Can anyone identify his comrade (right).

It's probably a lot to ask but I thought I'd give it a go.

Is there any more pics out there with landladies in.........Landladies are the forgotten hero's of the early commando units according to many vets I have spoken to.

Anyway enjoy the picture.
