Good effort JB,

A fantastic addition to your collection, fancied that myself.

Regards Vic
Pete,

Small excerpt from the 6 Commando war diary from that date reads:

0700-0715 - Approx 30 mortar shells land in our positions. Casualties:- 2 Dead (1 Intell Sect) 1 Wounded (1 Intell Section)

may be a clue, also I see that Lance Corporal Norman Walter Cassey's parent regiment was Royal Corps of Signals. If he was a Signalman it's quite possible he was attached to various Commandos through his service.

Welcome to the CVA forum,

If you haven't looked already there's an excellent site dedicated to 6 Commando. There is a Henry Ryan Price in the officers section who your Grandfather could of served under. Unfortunatey, in the list of ORs this isn't an entry for your Grandfather as far as I can see but there is large gallery of unidentified Commandos who served in 6.

http://www.6commando.com/index.html

May be worth looking through to see if you can identify him.

Good luck

Regards Vic
Stephen,

I think this is quite common, my Dad served from 1939 - 1946 and all we got was 2 and a bit summarised as Regiments served, posted to, embarked, disembarked and a military conduct statement. Have been trying to join the dots through reading war diaries where available. I know for sure my Dad was hospitalised after suffering burns to his legs but there's no mention of any of this. Our records were printed on new buff colour paper, some of the other records I have seen on this site look to have much more detail and are copies of orginal hand written records photocopied I presume.

Regards
Stephen,

I think you'll be able catch the full programme on BBC IPlayer, just checked "coming soon" so will have a look myself.

It wont be the first time, the EA Games series of 1st person computer shoot em ups "Medal of Honor" had an American leading the assault on St Nazaire followed by British Commandos. Now that was fiction !
What a character and what a life, I wonder if anyones ever considered making a film about him?
Just recieved a nice Fathers day present from the kids, a Bluray DVD called Age of Heroes, a film based on the formation of 30AU Commando staring Sean Bean. Its a fairly low budget film but I enjoyed all the same. There's a featurette included with archive stills and footage (most of which I have seen before through other sources) and interviews with former Commandos recounting thier experiences in this particular unit.

Great shot, am intrigued to know where this was taken, almost resembles a London Underground platform?

NIC,

Good effort with the ship, had a go myself but failed and have been following this thread.

Hi,

From what I understand 41RM Commando were involved in the Salerno landings alongside 2 Commando. Could 41RM be connected to the above unit (2RM.GP.MMBDO 125/LREG. TAUNTON).

hope you have luck finding more information.

Regards Vic
Hi Steve,

There's a member on this site Peter Bowe who runs another comprehensive site dedicated to No6 Commando http://www.6commando.com/index.html worth a look if you haven't done so already.

Regards Vic
Ian,

It certainly was the case for Signalers to be attached to various Commando units. My Father was a Signalman in 2 S.S Brigade Signal Troop and was supporting 41RM and 2 Commando at Salerno and then went on to another Commando unit in France then on to 45RM. Unfortunately this makes it a little more difficult to trace the movements as the specific details of the attachments were not in my Fathers service records. However, from what I've seen from some of the other service records for Commandos you can get lucky and have lots of detail.

Worth trying to get hold of his service records for starters then dig a bit deeper. The National Archives have a fair bit of info related to 41RM but I believe you have to arrange a visit to view.

Regards and good luck
