I attach an email I have just received:-
Hello Bill,

Yes, the commando display is permanent, however, depending when you were leaving on the Wednesday, we have further information in our archive which is open on Wednesdays. Please let me know about the Wednesday, if it is not suitable I might be able to get someone to come in on another of the days you are on the island to let you into the archive. The Museum is open every day from 10.30am until 4.30pm. we will do our best to let you see all that we have, mostly 11th Commando. I look forward to meeting you.

Bill (son of Gunner Bill Harvey No4 Commando)
Dieppe 19 August 1942 ? No 4 Commando

The Following pages contain the names, ranks and numbers of the officers and men of No4 Commando who attacked and destroyed the Hess Battery at Varengeville near Dieppe, on Wednesday the 19th of August 1942.
The list is the result of well over three years research and was begun solely because no record of the names of those involved in the action existed. Somewhere in the region of five hundred letters were sent to newspapers here in the UK, then Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The ensuing response was very good; contact was made with at least ninety Commandos as well as next of kin of those who are no longer with us. Each contributed with names of those they could recall as having been with No 4 Commando at Varengeville.
A number of names of those involved were already documented, the remainder, some two hundred names are the product of a consensus of opinion among the Commandos who were contacted. However, I wish to point out that opinions were not always unanimous; this was, quite naturally, to be expected but eventually sheer volume of opinion allied to personal memories persuaded me that the names submitted were clearly the names of those who were involved in ?Operation Cauldron?. The men of No 4 Commando were asked to delve deeply into their memories and recall an event that occurred forty eight years ago, this could not have been easy, their response was excellent and the rapport and teamwork which quickly materialised between us had to be experienced to be understood. Men whom I had never met became companions in the task, their constant message of advice and encouragements became the spur which enabled me to continue with what, at time was a frustrating task.
I can but once again thank each and every one of these Commandos for their inestimable assistance.
At the risk of being considered invidious I must mention the name of one person without whose help this list could not have been completed with accuracy and attention to detail such as numbers and regiments Etc. The General Secretary of the Commando Association Mr Ron Youngman proved to be a tower of strength, his patience and goodwill in the face of my interminable enquiries was exemplary.
Finally, I accept full responsibility for any errors but as Queen Victoria once remarked ?History is not what actually happened but what you believe happened?. Thus, I believe that within these pages are the names of all the men who fought and died at Varengeville.

We remember all the Army and RM Commandos who were killed in action or wounded in action and all the families.

Best wishes.

Bill
Will be passing the memorial in the bus today on the way to Inverness. Will be remembering, as I pass, our Commando family and all of those who are no longer with us.

Hi Jack

If my memory serves me No4 Commando moved on the 30 March 1945 to Bergen op Zoom so your search there may be good. The CWGC can supply information to relatives although it takes time. So the family may be able to find where the origional grave was. The CWGC was where I discovered that my Dad had been buried at Biervliet.

Bill
Hi Jack

The soldier at the graveside is he Dutch? It does say that in Maj Dunnings book that he was shot by a Dutch soldier.

Bill
Hi Jack

Joseph Ball was not buried at Biervliet as I have the list of all who were buried there. My Dad was re-buried in Bergen op Zoom on 5 June 1946 when all the temporary burial grounds were cleared. I can also confirm that Fus. Joseph Ball was in No4 Commando and is on the roll of honour. The CWGC record his death as 3 June 1945 so it is possible that he was buried in a temporary burial ground. Hope this helps.

Bill
On the trip over this year to represent No4 and the CVA and remember the fallen, Jochem Schmetz, my dutch friend, and I went exploring to see if we could find the site of the temporery grave yard where Dad was initially buried in Biervliet. With Jochem's help and the archivist we found the grave yard and also discovered that all those killed in action in Flushing, including the French, and have secured the list of those buried there. This includes some of the Scots.

I will be putting details onto the CVA site once I collate them.

Bill
Through the years many folk have asked me how to get crosses, poppies and wreaths. There is a web site where you can order these. www.ladyhaigpoppyfactory.org.uk

Best wishes.

Bill
Good one John. :D
