Hi Dan

The Forum search facility is still not working properly. A few examples :

Search on Whelan is No Trace

http://www.commandoveterans.org/cdoForum/posts/list/3078.page

Search on Morris brings up 7 results but does not find this one entered by Alan Orton on page 3:

http://www.commandoveterans.org/cdoForum/posts/list/30/1690.page

Search on Emmerson brings up 1 result but does not bring up this one:

http://www.commandoveterans.org/cdoForum/posts/list/3146.page

These are just a few of many examples

Regards

Pete

Jack Bakker has provided additional photos and information on 2 'Dutch' troop 10 Inter Allied Commando. This includes a short history of the Dutch Commandos. They have all been placed in the album for that troop.

The history document can be accessed here:

http://www.commandoveterans.org/cdoGallery/v/units/10IA/Dutch/No+2+Dutch+Troop.pdf.html

Thanks Jack

Here is a photo which was in the collection of L/Cpl. John Kenneth Emmerson who was known to all as Ken. Ken's son John is providing many photos from his father's collection to us. Ken served in No.2 , 14, and 12 Commandos finishing SS Bde HQ. He took many of the photos himself. Has anyone any knowledge of, or stories about, this bar/cafe
Hi Barry thanks for the information about the photo and your father. I have updated the photo accordingly :

http://www.commandoveterans.org/cdoGallery/v/units/12/dcm+7.jpg.html

I would imagine most of the men in this troop were involved in Anklet as almost 300 men from 12 Commando took part. If you have any other photos of your father from his Commando days, or any of his Commando comrades, and would like some placed in our photo galleries, please contact me by email.

Regards

Pete
A reminder of just 3 of the many operations during the month of December:

1941 Vaagso - Operation Archery http://www.commandoveterans.org/cdoGallery/v/WW2/Vaagso/

1942 Bordeaux - Operation Frankton

1943 The Hardtack raids including Sark http://www.commandoveterans.org/cdoGallery/v/units/10IA/French/Hardtrack+7/

Hi Paul

I have contacted Eric Buckmaster who served in 5 troop, along with my father and uncle, and he has confirmed the names as well. Thanks for providing the photo to us which is now in the 5 troop album:

http://www.commandoveterans.org/cdoGallery/v/units/2/5+troop/img616+_1_.jpg.html?g2_imageViewsIndex=1

Eric adds this about the three men:

Lionel Bowman, who came from the Wansted / Ilford Area and Paddy Deighan were Friends. Before being called up for the Army, and Joining 2 Commando, Lionel was employed by one of the National Newspapers. He was of Medium Height but quite sturdily Built. A very Positive man.

He was taken ill in Sicily ( As so many were ) and hospitalised, but he had recovered in time to be sent to catch up with us at Salerno.

In the nicest possible way Paddy Deighan was a Happy go Lucky Irishman who liked a Pint and Dog Racing.

Lionel rejoined 5 Troop part way through the action ( I was already a Casualty so I was not there ) but Paddy told me that a German sniper shot Lionel.

Post War I found myself at one stage working for a Large Timber Firm at Stratford, " Gliksten ", and Lionel's Brother in Law. was also working there. They knew about Paddy Deighan and were hoping that he would call to see them. However, Paddy who was quite a " gentle soul ", never got to see them. He did try on two or three occasions , but stopped to have a pint to bolster his Courage, and then felt that he was not fit to go.

He finished up in Australia, and had a Daughter out there. I am not sure if there were any other Children.

Harry Jacobs was a Small Jewish Lad who came from the Glasgow Area.

In Memory of Private 5956867 LIONEL GEORGE BOWMAN
Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment and No. 2 Commando
who died on 18 September 1943 aged 28.
Remembered with honour at SALERNO WAR CEMETERY

Definitely No.2 Commando and 5 troop:

On the left is (I think) Lionel Bowman kia at Salerno, the other two I am pretty certain are Harry Jacobs in the middle, and on the right Paddy Deighan. I will send it off to Eric and get him to check it out

Nice photo
Here is a link to this song by military wives, including those of British RM Commando and Army Commandos based at Chivenor and Plymouth:

Buy it now and make it No.1 for Xmas.

Proceeds from the single will go to the Royal British Legion plus military charity SSAFA

and another link showing how it all started, how "The Choir" progressed, concluding with their finale at The Royal Albert Hall, and the interviews afterwards.

In the absence of a photo of Fusiler Ball, I have posted the photo of his grave and the people paying respects into the No.4 Commando "In Remembrance" album. It can be viewed on this link:

Nick, I have sent you a pm regarding the other phto.
If the full criteria on application apply then you should get a copy of the full service record. However there are times when you will not if either you are not the immediate next of kin or not related. If you are the immediate next of kin and you have not received the full service record having sent in the application form, next of kin form, copy of the death certificate, and fee, you should go back to the MOD and ask for all the information to be supplied to you, or a reason why they cannot.

http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html

Under the scheme, and in recognition of the duty of care owed to the family of the deceased subject, for a period of 25 years following the date of death of the subject and without the consent of the Next of Kin, MOD will disclose only: surname; forename; rank; service number; regiment/corps; place of birth; age; date of birth; date of death where this occurred in service; the date an individual joined the service; the date of leaving; good conduct medals (i.e. Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (LS&GCM)), any orders of chivalry and gallantry medals (decorations of valour) awarded, some of which may have been announced in the London Gazette.

After this period, and if it is held, in addition MOD will disclose without the requirement for Next of Kin consent: the units in which he/she served; the dates of this service and the locations of those units; the ranks in which the service was carried out and details of WWII campaign medals.

The administration fee of £30 will be waived for requests from those who were the spouse or civil partner of the subject at the time of death (or parent if there was no spouse or civil partner).

Where the consent of the immediate next of kin has been given for its release to a third party, the 25 year threshold will not apply allowing the release of all the information available under the publication scheme at any time, subject to the payment of an administration fee of £30 per record and the provision of a death certificate (except where death was in service).

While MOD aims generally to provide information where the above conditions are met, it will not disclose any information under the publication scheme where this could prejudice the capability, effectiveness or security of its forces. In the very rare case where release of information from a record might be prejudicial, the applicant will be advised of the relevant Freedom of Information Act statutory exemption that applies to its non disclosure.

The information that is held on individuals varies depending on which Service they served with, when they served and the length of their Service (see Related Pages: Further information about Service Records held by MOD). In a small number of cases little or no information may be held. Applicants should be aware that the £30 administration fee is non-refundable whatever the outcome of the search.
First hopefully of many to be identified from John Emmersons album. Danny Lovell has identified the location to be Le Plain, Amfreville. The photo, we now know, depicts the Plinth to the Memorial being set in place by Commandos. Danny has provided a photo taken by him in 2007 clearly identifying the same location

Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year to everyone. Sorry to hear about your freezing weather Stephen, it's actually quite mild here today on the East coast of God's country, and the forecast is to get warmer

Pete

I contacted Julia Wells, daughter of Lance Corporal Henry Eric Harden VC, RAMC attd. 45RM Commando, to advise her of the recent photos of her father's original grave alongside those of his comrades. She kindly sent me a copy of the Grave Concentration Report form showing the Map reference of some of the original graves shown in the pictures including that of her father. They are all in the Maasbracht region:

http://www.commandoveterans.org/cdoGallery/v/Commando+War+Graves+Memorials+and+Plaques/graves/War+graves+Holland/nederweert/
Nick I am pleased you have made contact with Geoff. I know how pleased I was to discover Commandos like Bob Bishop and Eric Buckmaster who knew my father and uncle. How great to find a photo like that of your father, Geoff Hill and Sydney Lynn. I hope you find many more.
