What a shame the grouping was split up
Apologies Nick, slight correction. The GS cap wasn't introduced until Sep 43, they will almost certainly be wearing the TOS at that point.
Cheers
Paul
I know you don't want an online version, but if you get stuck, I use this one all the time which is really effective:

As always Paul the best advise is to send for his service records, see detailed instructions kindly provided from Nick here:

I can't make much out from the small photo provided I'm afraid!

I should warn you it can take 2 months to receive records at the moment

Paul
There is an image here of an early member of 6 Commando (Herbert Thompson) wearing the IV cap badge on a TOS:

It would interesting to see your images to see what can be concluded from them. If they are original photographs it's amazing how much detail comes out if they're scanned at a high resolution.
A name, DoB and service number would be helpful
Good luck
Paul
I appreciate this is quite an old post now, but I believe "J Allway, Horsley, Gloucs " is in fact Marine Victor Douglas Allway, PLY/X 100635, born 26 March 1920, Ebley, Gloucester.
He served in 42 RM Cdo from 1 August 1943 to 10 January 1946. On enlistment he lived at lived at 1 Council Houses, Horsley, Nailsworth, Gloucester.

Having enjoyed your book Phil, I watched this this afternoon and can heartily recommend it to everyone. Well done to all involved

For Operation Torch British troops were issued with GI uniforms as Churchill believed that the Vichy French would be more welcoming to US than British soldiers.
Good luck Vicky
Let's hope you can locate the family

Nice one JB, I was the under bidder! :D
cheers
Paul
Sorry Christophe
I'm saying I don't think the title on the statue existed, and I don't think the HQ badge was ever worn with the combined operations badge as displayed in your composite.
That said, just because there is no evidence it doesnt necessarily mean it didn't exist. However in all the years of collecting and researching I've never seen one.

Paul
Interesting image of the statue, I've never seen a shoulder title with that on (original or reproduction) or indeed any contempory photos of such a title being worn.
I remain to be convinced of the badge's existance
There is a well publicised photo of Bill a couple of days before D-Day. It looks to me like he's wearing a shoulder title, combined ops patch and a piper badge. I can't see the shoulder title being anything other than 'No. 4 Commando' though.
I've not aware of a single photograph showing the SS Bde HQ badge being worn, and the very few I've seen all appear to be unworn.

Bill

More than happy to advise, I've got various photos form visits over the years, I'll try and dig them out and post them

Regards
Paul
