Hi all. Ted told everyone he was a commando in WW2, but we are unable to find any records except an obituary entry for Edward Hasted, unit 6 on this site, but not on the roll call. He was originally from Aylesbury, but moved to Luton, where he was a painter and decorator after the war. He went to Leagrave British Legion for many years.
Any information would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Philip

Hi Philip,

I'm pleased to tell you that I have Edward Hasted in my No.6 Cdo Nominal Roll.
He is also mentioned in the Obituary Column of the Commando Association Newsletter issue 88, March 1989

Many thanks Nick. This is wonderful news for my Mother and her sisters and the rest of the family. Hopefully we can find out more info such as his service number, dates he served, any medals, etc. He was always seen as a bit of a "loveable rogue " so it is especially pleasing.

Best wishes, Philip

Hi Philip,

I would recommend that you apply to the MoD for a scan of his original, handwritten service records...
The MoD is the ONLY custodian of WWII Service Records.
You will need a copy of his Death Certificate (available from https://www.gov.uk/order-copy-birth-death-marriage-certificate if you don't have one), Either his service number OR his date of birth and an admin fee of £30...
The service records will give you details from enlistment to demob and will include medal entitlement. If he never claimed his medals, and many didn't, they are held at the Medal Office and your family can claim them at no cost. If they were issued and have been lost then it's often cheaper to buy replacements from a reputable dealer - WWII were not engraved with the recipient's name and number...

Please ask if you need any assistance or advice,

Nick

Hi Philip
If you have a photo of Edward Hasted that you would like included in the gallery please either post it in a reply to this message or if you have any difficulty email me via the email 'button' below and I will include it. I appreciate you have posted an image with some details but an image on its own would be preferable. I can add the details when updating the gallery and the main archive.

Ted Hasted appears in many of the No 6 Commando Veterans photos:
1962 - bottom row, 2nd right
No 6 at Porchester Hall series: (3) man rubbing the head of another, (4) bottom row, far left, (6) 2nd bottom row - behind man holding ?6?, (8) 2nd bottom row, 4th from right with a pipe, (9) 2nd bottom row, 4th from right.

Attached photo is from my Mother?s wedding day in April 1964.

Sadly, he remarried a year before his death, so we have none of his commando memorabilia. Any info much appreciated.

Thank you, Philip

Philip,

What a great photo of your grandfather - and how wonderful to see that he was so proud of being a commando, he wore his Commando Association tie at his daughter's wedding!

Hi Philip
Thank you for the photo which is now in our No.6 Commando gallery currently on page 1. Here is a link to that page and to our main archive entry. What does the initial J stand for ?

Apologies but no J as a middle name, just Edward Hasted. We discovered an unknown step-brother called Edward James Hasted b1907 from a previous marriage. Sorry for the confusion, so can you remove the J please. We now have birth and death certificate copies so will contact the National Archives. Thanks so much for your ongoing help. It means so much to our wider family.

Best wishes, Philip
