February 1944 saw 40RM Commando being reinforced at the River Garigliano and Monte Ornito and Monte Faito area of Italy by HQ 2 Cdo Bde., No 9 Commando, 43RM Commando, and the Belgian troop of 10IA Commando.
The subsequent ferocious fighting in the area saw many Commando casualties including thirty four commandos from No.9 Commando who died between the 31st January and the 4th February 1944.
In 1985 a Cairn was built by Tom Bostock MM, Les Callf MC, Les Hopkins DCM, and Dave Belasco in the remote hills at the location which is still there to this day.
In September 1989 a marble memorial stone was positioned in the cairn. The memorial stone was a most generous gift from Signor Marcello Casatelli, head of the Marble Works at Castelforte, and secured in position with the help of local council officials and workers.
No. 9 Commando veterans Major Les Callf MC [more....], Tom Bostock MM [more....], and Cliff Searle DCM [more....] were amongst the party present and were kindly taken by jeep supplied by the Italian Army from the base of mountain to the cairn.

God and the Soldier, all men adore, In time of danger and not before.
When the danger is passed and all things righted, God is forgotten, and the Soldier slighted.
